BBC NEWS | In Pictures | In pictures: Rio violence SAVE
This photo essay from the BBC shows pictures that were taken in the favela Complexo do Alemão when 1,300 police stormed the favela (slum) to take out the drug traffickers in 2007 before the Pan-American games. These pictures show ordinary citizens hiding to try to get out of the crossfire and people helping those who have been wounded. The pictures are able to convey the intense fear that must have been going on in the minds of both the citizens of the favela and the police at the time. (89)TAGS

Favela Tours in Rio de Janeiro: Visit Rio's Favelas, or Slums: Brazil's ... SAVE
This site was important to my research because it allowed me to learn more about the favela tours in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I was able to see how these tours are marketed to tourists. The site says that you will be able to safely tour the favela and witness the daily lives of its hard working community members. With the wide popularity of the film City of God, many people envision the favelas to be a constant war zone between drug traffickers and police, but most of the community members are not associated with the drug trafficking and the tours allow you to a more peaceful side of the favela. Community In Action (Comunidade em Ação) - Communityinaction.org SAVE
This site is AWESOME! Community in Action is a NGO located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There is a short video that helped me better understand what life is like in the favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The video shows both the good and the bad in the favelas. It mentions that on June 27, 2007 the state police sent 1,300 armed troops into the favela Complexo do Alemão to get rid of the drug traffickers before the Pan-American Games and19 people were killed, some of which were not involved in the drug trafficking (96).TAGS

Observatorio de Favelas SAVE
This site is useful because it offers an example of one of the many non-governmental organizations that exists in the State of Rio de Janeiro with the purpose of trying to overcome social inequalities and enforcing social rights within the favela communities. Similar to other organizations, “Slum Observatory”, was founded by professionals who are from the favelas of Rio. This goes to show that community members of the favelas, themselves, are creating professional organizations to try to better the situation for all members of these communities. (84)TAGS

Week of Violence in Zona Sul SAVE
I found this article to be very useful, mainly because many people have commented on it. The comments all seem to present different opinions of the favelas, or slums, in Rio de Janeiro, which allowed me to better understand how the people react to the drug violence in the favela Rocinha. One of the comments is from a member of Rocinha who explains that the current drug lords treat the community members very well. Another is from someone who feels that the violence is due to the market and request of the drugs outside of the favela. (97)TAGS
