Widefinder 2 with Clojure SAVE
PEOPLE
Really interesting walkthrough of a clojure implementation of the Widefinder project. There seem to be some really good ideas in Clojure, but I think that ruby may have forever spoiled me when it comes to readability. There is no excuse for a modern language to prepend to a list using a function called "cons" (yes, I understand the Lisp heritage, but still) The primary purpose of a language should be communicating to other humans, and I think the Lisp derived languages have a lot of work to do in that respect.TAGS

Good introduction on the state of the new breed of various non relational data stores. The more I read about these the more I am convinced that they are a good fit for a large number of web applications and as they mature they're going to become very important.TAGS

Michael Lewis on A.I.G. SAVE
PEOPLE
Fascinating story of the hedge fund that almost brought down the world financial system. Michael Lewis never ceases to amaze me with the clarity and humanity that he manages to bring to stories about finance. If there is any silver lining to the financial crisis it is that one of the 2 best working non fiction writers began his career as a bond trader so has some understanding, and more importantly, contacts in the generally opaque world of high finance.TAGS

Fascinating article about the role that Hal Varian plays at google as their chief economist. Unfortunately, like most Wired articles it is a bit light on detail for my taste, but it paints a very interesting picture of the culture required of a data driven company.TAGS

I understand why people are upset about the AIG bonuses, but I really think that people are focusing WAY too much attention on it. It is less than 1/10 of 1 percent of the money we've given to AIG. We need our leaders to focus their attention on big problems, not ones that make for good populist outrage. Furthermore, for better or worse, we as taxpayers are now the majority shareholders of the company, and as bad as they've been run, we have to recognize that it could very possibly be worse were they to face a mass exodus of staff.TAGS

Humans No Match for Go Bot Overlords SAVE

We're making some significant progress in creating programs that play Go. When I was studying AI in college back in 2004 the best programs were routinely trounced by amateurs. Now, the best programs are a 6 stone handicap from mid level professionals. Still a long way to go, but impressive progress none the less.TAGS
