rahirah: Going freelance SAVE
PEOPLE
I would bet that the same basic argument gets rehashed in every other fan faction, as well - who's one of us, and who's one of them? Why don't they get out of the fandom and stop ruining it for us? In fandom you've gotta have a label, and for the most part those labels are based on pairings. But those pairing labels encompass a staggering variety of preferences...."This story contains Buffy and Spike in a relationship. However, rest assured that it's not really Spuffy," does not seem terribly wieldy. And no matter what people inside the Spuffy community may think, people outside it are almost certain to think that a story such as that is Spuffy, and be justifiably irritated at the apparent mislabeling.TAGS

angearia: Segregation and Miscommunication in our Fandom SAVE
PEOPLE
But here is the problem with my experience: LJ is an extremely insular community where it's not easy to meet new fans. Yes, we all have a few communities we're members of and it's been a great way to meet people, but I don't know all of the communities in our fandom and it seems like the communities are places where we want to highlight involvement and special events because that's where people meet and come together. As was pointed out to me, we're a fandom that is largely segregated into our own pairing/interests ghettos....
As for the su_herald , it appears that there might be a need a for a feedback session or perhaps just a group of interested folks who'd be willing to give the Herald feedback and help them keep aware of what's happening in fandom. They're not omniscient, so let's help them to find those great fics and in return I'd hope the Herald would appreciate more people being willing to point them towards interesting fic, graphics, meta and all manner of fandom works.TAGS

ladyofthelog: my thoughts about su_herald SAVE
It seems to me that the current dissatisfaction with su_herald stems from the conflicting views about how su_herald should operate and what content it should be cover. There seems to be some frustration with the moderators on this point, but frankly? They are doing their jobs. They are providing, as stated in the su_herald FAQ, "a nice small quantity of good fics to post and for you all to read".
That said, right now, su_herald is *the* main daily comm for Buffy fandom on LJ. It doesn't seem unreasonable to suggest that, given the size of the fandom (not huge, but certainly active), they could provide more coverage.TAGS

katekat1010: A matter of taste? SAVE
That being said, the Herald's whole 'we have a right to link to what we think is good and not to what we don't think is good' is possibly justifiable when you've got a thriving fandom that turns out 80 million fics and graphics every five minutes. Or if, you know, you've actually got people who are scouring the internets for "good" works and linking to them.
But frankly? Watching the daily lists of the Merlin fandom, Torchwood, and heck, even of the Kradam portion of the AI fandom? They don't leave anything off. And they've got WORLDS more crap to cover every day.
Also, whatever the Herald is doing now has nothing to do with being arbiters of taste in the fandom.TAGS

A gen fic is a fic that isn't using a shippy lens to tell the story. It may have the same dialogue, same action as a shippy fic (because romantic pairings are common so they're gonna pop up even in gen fics). But without that shippy lens, the prose will be different.TAGS

rahirah: On Writing Children SAVE
PEOPLE
"So you want to write babyfic, but don't want to get tarred with the dread brush of 'Eeeeew, babyfic!'"
Well, the bad news is, you can't avoid the dread brush no matter how hard you try. The good news is, you can take steps to ensure that if some babyfic hater clicks on your story link by accident, they won't immediately click away. If you play your cards right, you may even get the coveted "I usually hate babyfic, but..." feedback. So let us say that you've given in to the compulsion to make your favorite characters breed. What next?TAGS

noracharles: International fandom, again. SAVE
When you are in a discussion about tensions between cultures and prejudices against certain nationalities, and how Westerners (hint: especially Canadians and U.S. Americans) are generally ignorant, dismissive and fearful of people from certain countries, don't reframe the discussion to be about your own nation and culture, erasing and dismissing the actual people from actual different countries than your own whom you are currently talking to.TAGS

selenak | Best Friends For... a rather limited time-span? (Spoilers for West Wing, BtVS, AtS and DS9) SAVE
What do you do, oh flist? When characters are portrayed as good friends in canon (doesn't matter whether or not you also ship them in a romantic sense or see the relationship as platonic or the family type of bond; there just has to be an on screen closeness that awoke your interest), and then these characters cease to have scenes together, and don't reference each other in dialogue anymore, either. Do you go the denial route - "they're still friends, we just don't see a lot of scenes"/"they're still friends, I reject on screen canon" - or do you accomodate for the changed on screen circumstances in your perception of the relationship(s)?TAGS

rahirah: Voice SAVE
PEOPLE
The bottom line is, voice is not something artificial that you impose upon a story from outside, or it shouldn't be. It's an organic outgrowth of the way you think and speak and write, polished up and made spiffy.TAGS
