Inscribed in the living tile: Type in the Toronto subway (Joe Clark) SAVE

    PEOPLE
ou might not expect something typographically unique to come out of Toronto, a B-tier city that stands in the shadow of A-tier cities even in the minds of some residents. But the margins are where originality can thrive, and the typography of the Toronto subway is a prime example. It is also an example of subverting, ignoring, and actively destroying a special typographic heritage – quite an achievement considering that the type involved is almost a foot high and permanently sandblasted into subway walls.

    PEOPLE
It’s deliberately grounded in the here-and-now, more or less, so it will seem rather old hat to some of you. Which in a sense it is. And in another sense, it isn't. But either way, this was a better strategy for the task-in-hand, and in imagining the scene below, via a kind of narrative, it's still remarkable to even sketchily consider how much data is already around us, and is near-invisible to traditional urban planning perspectives. And I'd suggest that this data beginning to profoundly affect the way the street feels. Some quick analysis follows the narrative, raising a series of questions for governance, legislation and the public-private partnerships that also constitute the contemporary street.

    PEOPLE
Commissioned to celebrate the re-opening of the Howard Assembly Room, ‘Chorus’ is simultaneously an intensely physical and yet ephemeral experience. An array of motor-assisted pendulums, suspended from the roof, swing through the space emitting light and sound. As the dynamic system evolves, the rhythms revolve through chaos and return to unison, producing a hypnotic and seductive performance that heightens the viewer’s awareness of the space and their relationship with it. ‘Chorus’ is effectively a new kind of musical instrument, one in which the spatial location of each sound is a critical part of the composition of the piece.

    PEOPLE
This is something on par with Muji, where the essence of the radio has absolutely been distilled to it’s core. I think kids would get a kick out of this, and I’m tempted to add that I’d be inclined to start listening to the radio again if I had something like this in my kitchen. Really great idea.
