Agreed on strategy #2: become very good (in the top 25%) at 2+ things. Especially the "+"—the more high-level skills you can mash up, the better shot you have. It's incredibly hard to *get* so good you land in the top 25% of even two or more things, plus then there's the problem of finding the right avenue.
