At a time when many companies are drastically cutting jobs, Google Canada says it's hiring in all of its offices and has good reason to grow: Canada is more into Google and its products than just about any other country. Google has posted help-wanted ads for 16 positions in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Waterloo, Ont. The company has about 100 Canadian employees in all.TAGS

The energy of the proton beams was increased from 450 billion electron volts to 540 billion over the weekend, said James Gillies, spokesman for the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN. That's still a fraction of the power capabilities of the Large Hadron Collider. I found an interesting study about social media in the workplace, called “Whistle but don’t tweet at work.” The poll reports that 54% of companies ban social networking entirely, even for business purposes. Organizations are clearly struggling how to address social media. Many start with the premise of social media as a threat, rather than an opportunity. The emphasis is on limiting liability, often with Draconian command-and-control policies (like the muzzle and cage in this cartoon).TAGS

Dartmouth Computer Scientist Hany Farid has new evidence regarding a photograph of accused John F. Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Farid, a pioneer in the field of digital forensics, digitally analyzed an iconic image of Oswald pictured in a backyard setting holding a rifle in one hand and Marxist newspapers in the other. Oswald and others claimed that the incriminating photo was a fake, noting the seemingly inconsistent lighting and shadows. After analyzing the photo with modern-day forensic tools, Farid says the photo almost certainly was not altered.TAGS
